A perfect match for Christmas: Alta Alella Laietà Magnum

What wine to open for Christmas? In her “all-purpose wines” list featured in Cocina Hola!, Laura S. Lara, journalist and sommelier, suggests the Alta Alella Laietà Magnum 2019 for the holidays.

She calls them “all-purpose wines” because of their ability to pair with a wide range of flavors. In the case of the Laietà, she highlights: “Its cosmopolitan and experienced character makes it perfect for special occasions like Christmas, which is why we recommend it in Magnum format”.

When it comes to pairing, S. Lara suggests seafood dishes: “A cava that enhances the marine flavors and boosts its freshness when paired with grilled seafood, especially prawns or scallops”.

The cava is described by the author Olivia Mason as “Fresh and lifted on the nose, with the wild grass and saffron of Xarel.lo (as Pansa Blanca) mingling with Chardonnay’s creamier orchard fruits. Palate is long and fine-foamed, with breadth and structure. Age has brought harmony, yet the the fine raw materials have retained freshness”.

Alta Alella Mirgin EXEO, amongst ‘the most exquisite cavas’ by La Vanguardia

“These are the six Spanish wineries that produce the most exquisite cavas. Only ten products from six wineries are at the top of the qualitative pyramid of the Cava Designation of Origin”

Ramon Francàs discovers in La Vanguardia, a Spanish newspaper, a list of six cavas that he describes as “crème de la crème”. Qualified Paraje Cavas, which are “unique, the result of a special place, a vineyard, and a estate that stands out from the rest due to its characteristics”.

Alta Alella Mirgin Exeo Exeo Paraje Calificado Vallcirera is one of the cavas included in this exclusive list: “In the olfactory phase, iodized notes already assault us, transporting us to the sea of ​​Maresme. Aus Pét-Nat amongst the 100 must-haves of 2024 by Comer La Vanguardia

The prestigious Wine Guide of ‘Comer La Vanguardia’ recognizes Aus Pét-Nat for its complexity, freshness and ancestral elaboration

A team of renowned sommeliers, tasters and specialized journalists, formed by Ferran Centelles, Meritxell Falgueras, María José Huertas, Alicia Estrada, Zoltan Nagy and Lluís Tolosa (director of the guide), are in charge of selecting “the 100 essential wines for this 2024”.

Amongst them is the AUS Pét-Nat from the Pujol-Busquets family, an ancestral wine made with Pansa Blanca variety and without added sulfites. “It is a dry and refreshing sparkling wine, slightly bitter and herbaceous in the palate, where the green almond flavors are a great highlight. This winemaking method gives it complexity and structure. The natural wines from Celler de les Aus should not be missing in your home if you want to expand your knowledge and enjoy exciting oenological experiences”, describes Zoltan Nagy about the wine, which has been awarded 92 points.

The guide recognizes the wines chosen on the basis of various criteria, including red and white native grape varieties, international grape varieties, trend-setters and winemaking methods, amongst others.

Wine Enthusiast gives Alta Alella wines high marks

Two wines from the Alta Alella winery have been highlighted with outstanding ratings in the August-October edition of the renowned Wine Enthusiast magazine. These are the cava Alta Alella Laietà Gran Reserva (94 points and editors’ choice mention) and the white wine Alta Alella Cau d’en Genís (93 points and ‘Hidden Gem’ mention). 

Alta Alella Laietà Gran Reserva: “This ballet slipper pink sparkler offers a nose of apricot, jasmine and rising bread dough. Vibrant flavors of Granny Smith apple and carambola mingle with notes of Turkish delight, white chocolate and a touch of slivered almond. Notes of lemon zest and almond blossom linger on the palate.” — Mike DeSimone

Alta Alella Cau d’en Genís: “Made with 100% Xarel-lo, this wine offers a nose of Bartlett pear and lemon blossom.
